Oxus

Sophie Ibbotson

Sophie Ibbotson is an explorer, writer and development consultant. Last summer she travelled to Afghanistan to identify the true source of the River Oxus, the location of which has perplexed geographers, diplomats, and spies for over 200 years. Her discovery forms the backbone of Oxus, a source-to-sea travelogue and biography of the river.

As well as authoring six Bradt travel guides (Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Sudan and South Sudan), Sophie is co-founder and managing editor of Panorama: The Journal of Intelligent Travel, Uzbekistan’s Tourism Ambassador to the UK, a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University’s Changing Character of War Centre, a consultant for the World Bank, a board member of the British Georgian Chamber of Commerce and a council member of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs.
