Hilary Bradt
Taking the Risk
To mark the 50th anniversary of the award-winning travel publisher, Hilary Bradt will unpick her bold lifetime journey from occupational therapist to hitch-hiking around the Middle East and six months travelling from San Francisco to Rio de Janeiro. In 1974 with her former husband George, she self-published her first guidebook during an extended journey throughout South America, thus founding Bradt Travel Guides. A backpacking guide to Africa followed, along with four more South American titles. For the first 25 years she combined writing guide books – winning the IPG/Sunday Times Small Publisher of the Year award in 1997 - with leading adventure and natural history tours to South America, Africa and Madagascar. Her contributions to tourism resulted in an MBE among other major awards.
